the long dark satin stitch of the soul

M broidery

Sometimes embroidery takes me a really long time. It’s not because it’s hard, or boring, or tedious—it’s because the thread runs out. It’s the whole inertia thing. When I’m stitching, I want to keep stitching and when I have to stop and thread the needle, I want to just stop. Also, and perhaps this a window into the amount of anxiety I am capable of having, when the thread is about 2/3 used up, I get a little worried wondering when I am going to run out and have to re-thread. This is so weird because threading is not hard. I still like embroidery, though, and this will be pretty cute when it’s done.

I know that feeling! I get like that too when I’m hand-sewing, which leads to me to thread ridiculously long lengths onto the needle, which then get all tangled up anyway.

Try threading several needles in the begining.

It happens to me in machine sewing too. If my bobbins run out (and I thread at least 2 at a time) then I figure it’s a good enough stopping point. With embroidery, it’s not that the needle is hard to thread, but I have to figure out when to stop (making sure there’s enough for that last thread), start obsessing about stopping too soon and wasting thread (which really? must measure in the millimeters), and I might have to get out the scissors and deal with knots. Blech.

I totally do that too. And ditto Joyce on the threading way-too-long lengths. Then it gets tangled, I get frustrated, and it all would have been much better if I had just used a shorter length to begin with and had to thread a new needle. And yet I’ll do it the same way next time, I’m sure!
